In 1951, as part of "Education Week" a colour film was made of the School and its
activities. Does anyone know if this film has survived and its present whereabouts ?

I have just spotted your new bulletin boad which mentions the missing film. I have not yet
looked to see if they have a web site but have you heard of the North-West Film Archive. I
think it is run by the University of Manchester/Manchester Museums? but they collect
professional and amateur film relating to the area, you never know they might have the
one you are looking for. Talking of films, there is a programme running on TV, starring
Brian Conley. The series is called "The Grimleys' . I saw it by accident one evening whilst
channel hopping and all the action was taking place on Claremont playing fields. Talking
of playing fields, in my early years at at Claremont we used to go to Bolton Road/Duchy
Road playing fields for football periods. I am now wondering why we did when Claremont
had its own - or would Mr Shepherd (the caretaker) not let us spoil the grounds ?
Talking of memories, does anyone recall the Salford City Transport double-decker school
buses, in particular the chrome radiator Daimlers (they would never rock as well as the
old Crossleys!!!). Well one of them survives and I am still a sleeping partner of the group
which preserved it (it is back in running order after 27 years in storage). It was built in
1951 and if I can find one I will send a photo of it at Salford Show at Claremont in the
1970's

I'd like to hear from Tony Taylor who went to the School from 1950 to about 1956 like me
and used to live in Swinton Park Road.
Also Alan Paine who lived in Venesta Avenue and was a year ahead of me - 1949 to
1955.

Do you remember the occasion when Mike Berwin ran, down the aisle at morning
assembly, screaming, "I can't breath! I can't breath!" ?
Tom Hockton looked decidely uneasy and Poppitt led Berwin away, softly sobbing.
This incident became known as "the Tom Hockton Assassination Attempt".

Hi, I'm an old Salford lad and I'm looking for a lad who I grew up with. His name is
Anthony Porter (Tony). He used to go to Salford Grammar and would have left in about
1975. I would appreciate any help please. We grew up in the same street and were best
mates. I ended up moving to Littleborough then on to Australia in 1978. I have tried all
avenues to find Tony but all to no avail. Tony will be 43 now and he has a younger brother
called Andrew and another brother Steven. Tony moved to Prestwich about 1972-73 and I
lost contact with him.
If there is anyone who can help me contact him, I would be totally indebted to you. My
contact details are

From Terance Riley, 21st April 2002.
I attended S.G.S. from 1961 - 69, I was in York House and forms 1 & 2C, 3/4/5/M
and then the sixth form. After all these years I am curious, as we all are, to find out
what happenned to the 'boys' I was at school with.
Some of them I still keep in touch with, or know their whereabouts, e.g. Paul Liddle,
Graham Hewitt, Dave Fallows, Eric Farrell, Steve Latimer. But where are all the
rest ? Dennis Bagnall, Les Hughes (last seen in Tesco's in Burnley), Brian Smith,
Chris Wilde, to name but a few.
If anyone from this time reads this, may I ask them to contact me as I am very
interested to hear what happenned to them. Are they all still alive (sadly
Alan Arnison died), where are they living, what are they doing and what of the
masters ?

I have just come across the Old Salfordians website. What a great idea. I went
to Salford Grammar between 1961-1968 and in those days I was known by the
nickname 'Harry'. I was in Gloucester House, played a bit of football. I'm still in
touch with Terry Riley, Paul Liddle, occasionally Dave Marsh and Frank Burns.
It would be good to hear from some of my old friends-Roy Maxwell, Mac Merritt,
Frank Wilson, Robbo, Lucas just to name a few.
I have the school photo from 1963 - does anyone have the photo from 1967?
That was a good year - I've fond memories of a week's geography field trip to
Keswick led by Gurnie McQuade and in the coach about to return to Salford,
looking back at the hotel to see Bob Davies's Swinton bobbie hat hanging from
the hotel roof ! Ring any bells ?

One of the oldest of the on-line Old Sals has just had his novel published !
Sydney Schubert, who began at SGS in 1938, and is still working as a doctor here in
Toronto, has written a novel, "The Gorilla Diary". An excerpt from the novel is
available on-line, and can be read at the publisher's web site at www.xlibris.com
by searching at the site under the author's name or the title of the book.
